Chat ControlProtect your messages
How to protect your messages
The permanent Chat Control law is not in force. These steps are about who can read your messages today. None is a way around any law.
Checked 29 October 2026 against the sources.
Five steps
Under the temporary rules, a provider may scan messages it can read, but not end-to-end encrypted ones.1 So the first question is which of your messages are end-to-end encrypted.
- Check which of your chats are end-to-end encrypted. With end-to-end encryption, only the devices in the conversation hold the keys. Some apps do it by default, some only in certain chat modes. The app's own security page says which.
- Check your backups. An encrypted chat can end up readable if it is backed up to a cloud account without end-to-end encryption. Look for an encrypted backup option in the app's settings.
- Keep your devices updated and locked. On your own phone, messages are readable to anyone who can unlock it. A strong passcode and automatic updates matter as much as the app.
- Use disappearing messages for sensitive chats. Most major messengers let you set a timer per chat.
- Think about where your email is stored.Webmail is one of the services the temporary rules name, and email that is not end-to-end encrypted can be read and scanned on the provider's servers.1
Email the provider can't read at rest
Secria, which makes this site, makes an email service and a VPN. Your mailbox is stored with zero-access encryption, locked with a key made from your password on your device. We don't read your mail, show ads or build a profile.
What the law would change
The Commission's 2022 text would have let authorities order scanning on any service, regardless of the technology it uses.2 The Council's mandate drops detection orders and relies on voluntary scanning instead.3 The final law is still being negotiated. How it would work
This page gives general privacy steps. It is not legal advice.
